  • 20 Years Ago today, TNA was born. Impact celebrates it's 20th anniversary with Slammiversary XX tonight.

It gets a "LOLTNA" moment: It is being held at what was known as the TNA Asylum, the Tennessee State Fairgrounds Sports Arena. The little tidbit is when Geodis Park was built, the arena was supposed to be torn down to add for more additional parking. City Council voted to do some renovations instead of tearing it down. Keep in mind, the FlopBallFlopBallFlopBallFlopBallFlopBallFlopBall pitch was built on the fairgrounds parking lot. They only have 5,000 parking spaces and Nashville SC has sold out all of it's weekend games. They shuttle from Nissan Stadium to Geodis Park for $10. Nashville SC plays at 6pm ET today. The PPV begins at 8pm, with the YouTube pre-show at 7pm ET.

    • AJ Styles performed a video message at Slammiversary after being named the most impactful X Division wrestler of the last 20 years. Awesome that they let him do that.

          • Climax schedule released. Opening night is July 16 and will be highlighted by Okada vs Cobb and SANADA vs White.

Ishii is NJPW's representative for the All-Atlantic title four-way at Forbidden Door, joining Pac, Miro, and Black/Penta (which'll be Black since Penta can't work the show).

And Kushida is officially back in the New Japan fold.

              • Do... do we really need to make Luke Perry's death a promo point?

It just feels so icky when they do that.

Also, I'm having a hard time trying to wrack my brains for who would possibly be worthy enoiugh to replace Brian Danielson. My thought is it has to be like a Kurt Angle level talent, and its obviously not him.

Its very likely going to be Claudio, and while that may not excite WWE type fans, having him unleashed vs. ZSJ adds to a tremendous card given the circumstances of two top talent being out for AEW and Naito/Ibushi out for NJPW. There are lessons to be learned...they cant have this show so close to DoN and Dominion...there should be a proper 6-8 week build, with a much better introduction of NJPW stars to the American audience...the PPV is hampered by injuries and politics from Mexican promotions...no Omega hurts...but this card is excellent:
                  • Interim AEW World Championship: Jon Moxley vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
                  • IWGP World Championship: Jay White vs. Kazuchika Okada vs. Hangman Page vs. Adam Cole
                  • AEW All-Atlantic Championship: PAC vs. Miro vs. Tomohiro Ishii vs. Malakai Black
                  • IWGP United States Championship: Will Ospreay vs. Orange Cassidy
                  • AEW Women's World Championship: Thunder Rosa vs. Toni Storm
                  • ROH and IWGP Tag Team Championships: FTR vs. Jeff Cobb & Great-O-Khan vs. Roppongi Vice
                  • Sting, Darby Allin, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi vs. Young Bucks, El Phantasmo, Hikuleo
                  • Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara & Minoru Suzuki vs. Eddie Kingston, Wheeler Yuta & Shota Umino
                  • Zack Sabre Jr. vs. TBA (Likely Claudio/Cesaro)
                  • (Kickoff) The Gunn Club and Max Caster vs. NJPW Dojo

                  • I really like how they didn't make it just AEW vs. NJPW, that they decided to have interbrand tag matchups (Suzuki-gun & JAS, Sting/Darby & LIJ, TUE & Bullet Club). I'd like to see Aussie Open added to a kickoff match as well, but maybe against another tag team from AEW just to kick the show off (Private Party).

                    • I've seen some complaints that the build to Forbidden Door has been too choir-preachy, and that's one of the reasons the ratings are down. Like... if youre an NJPW fan, or at least familiar with the product, you're absolutely loving this, but if you're a casual who has no idea or only a passing mention of guys like Okada, Tanahashi, and White, you're pretty much left wondering who all these guys are, and why you should care about them, and "trust us, they're awesome" isn't quite cutting it.

It helps that we got some absolute bangers of matches out of Ospreay and Tana in the buildup, but maybe some more could have been done. Like Okada coming out at the eleventh hour to set up a four-way match for the IWGP (and was it just me or did Okada look bored?) And I was totally bummed there was zero LIJ representation right up until Darby Allin just casually namedrops Shingo and Hiromu. 4

I'm afraid this is going to be a fantastic show with a disappointing buyrate.

It makes sense for there to be comraderie, considering AEW is very much a NJPW offshoot. I mean, hell, save for Punk and his one week active reign, every AEW champion either came out of New Japan (Omega, Page) or featured in New Japan for some dream bouts (Jericho, Mox). The Elite is a Bullet Club spinoff (and it makes sense them being friends now given the main anti-elite hardliners GoD got kicked out). Archer is still considered part of Suzuki-gun. Trent, Chuck, and OC are members of Chaos (as is Yuta according to NJPW's website).

Another observation- I think most of the main NJPW guys have looked somewhat uncomfortable doing the American television format. Okada and Tana definitely did. I think Suzuki did at first, although he's certainly adapted. Even Ospreay looked a little tentative to start. Jay White took to it like a fish in water. Guys a natural.

                            • It really is a cursed show...that said, it should still be excellent. There are people saying Claudio was seen working out in ring in Chicago. Good chance thats Danielsons replacement.
