  • Americans are unhappy with politics. But a third party faces an uphill battle

    https://thehill.com/homenews/campaig...uphill-battle/

Democrats are unhappy with President Biden. And a number of Republicans are fed up with their party’s standard bearer, former President Trump.

But are disenfranchised voters mad enough to consider going for a third party?

Nope. The last 2 elections we had the prime example of having no one worth voting for. Literally no one worth voting for. And a 3rd party candidate couldn't even sniff a %. It would take a worldwide known person to break thru.

Again, at this point, this might be the only thing on which the two parties agree. They will actively kill any third party.

Even if there was a third party, it will still end up being "my team vs your team" politics. We will end up back at the same place.

Third party sounds great on paper, but in reality nothing would really change. You'll end up with D's over here, R's over there, and the T's will split themselves between the D's and the R's. The only thing it would do is take a few campaign dollars away from direct control of the big parties...and we all know that the parties don't want some of the money, they want ALL of the money...which is why they kill any attempt to form new parties.

Look at the UK. They have many different parties, but in the end, they all coalesce into Team A vs Team B.

It would basically be the causcus system on steroids.

It would be better because the UK forces coalitions to be formed, which requires some concessions but yea the president/PM there is always going to be a Tory or Labor.

In our country, we have two big tent parties: the Republican Party, that ranges from establishment-type conservatives right on up to Christian Nationalists and the Democratic Party, that ranges from moderates right on down to the progressives. There isn’t an analogue to the Liberal parties seen in other nations. But, if a third party were to come into existence, it would almost assuredly be populated by Joe Manchin types, that don’t fit neatly into the conservative or liberal modes. In a perfect world, this would be the Bell Curve party, operating as a foil for the other two. But, this is problematic, as it would also be the party that would be cast as lacking conviction, by both liberals and conservatives. Oftentimes, in politics, it’s less about the raw numbers than it is about who screams the loudest. To wit, liberals decry the GOP as the party of MTG while conservatives believe the DNC is the party of AOC. Each believes the other party suffers from the inmates running the asylum.

The US system has caucuses within the parties that effectively do the same thing.

The CBC leverages itself against the democrats, and the Freedom Caucus leverages itself against the republicans. Bith intended to get concessions that they want.

It basically results in a semantic change.

Remove FPTP, implement ranked choice voting and multi-member districts. Abolish the electoral college. Expand the House.

Without doing any of that, or even a little of it, a third party will never gain traction beyond winning a few state legislature seats here and there. But do all of it? Then we can potentially elect a few third party candidates to Congress, which will give them legitimacy.

democrats are fucking retards for being unhappy with Biden - the biggest knock is he's old and sometimes makes gaffes. Have you seen the other side? He seems sane compared to EVERYBODY on the other side as well as 3rd party candidates.

He doesn’t seem sane, he seems barely conscious and mostly unaware. How many times has he shaken hands with people that aren’t there now? I know it’s at least a few.

I don't dislike Biden, definitely not a go getter at his age.

He'll be 85 if he has a second term. I mean who wants to work at rich and 85?
