The Douglas County, Nev., public library wanted to take a stand this week: “Everyone is welcome,” read a proposed diversity statement, which added the library “denounces all acts of racism, violence and disregard for human rights. We support #BlackLivesMatter.”
But Douglas County Sheriff Daniel Coverley quickly took a stand of his own.
“Due to your support of Black Lives Matter and the obvious lack of support or trust with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, please do not feel the need to call 911 for help,” Coverley wrote in a letter to the library published Monday. “I wish you good luck with disturbances and lewd behavior.”

                    • An investigation has been launched into a group of California police officers accused bending their badges to mark how many people they've killed while on duty and then partying at backyard barbecues to commemorate the occasion.

According to a report by Open Vallejo, "a secretive clique" within the Vallejo Police Department has participated in the so-called "Badge of Honor" ritual for nearly a generation. The lengthy investigation uncovered that at least 14 of the 51 current and former officers have been involved in fatal shootings since 2000 and then had a point of their badge bent by a fellow officer.

                      ...

John Whitney, a former SWAT commander, said he was promptly fired after his push to investigate the secret ritual and other department misconduct. The former police captain said he first became aware of the practice in February 2019, following the shooting of 20-year-old Willie McCoy.

                        .

Some 45 police officers were reportedly injured in Berlin on Saturday as they tried to break up a large gathering of people demonstrating against coronavirus restrictions, including the face mask requirement.

Three of the officers were being treated in hospital, Berlin police said in a statement.

                              • Aurora police apologize after Black children were detained, handcuffed in stolen car mixup
Video shows a 17-year-old and 12-year-old lying on their stomachs with their hands cuffed behind their backs

AURORA — Aurora police apologized after a group of Black girls were detained and at least two handcuffed during a weekend investigation of a stolen car. Officers later determined that the vehicle they were seeking had the same license plate number but was from out of state.

A video taken Sunday by a bystander shows the children, ranging in age from 6 to 17 years old, in a parking lot in Aurora, where there have recently been protests over the death of a 23-year-old Black man, Elijah McClain, who was stopped by police last year, KUSA-TV reported.

The video shows the 17-year-old and 12-year-old lying on their stomachs with their hands cuffed behind their backs and a 14-year-old girl lying next to the 6-year-old, also on their stomachs, in a parking lot next to the car. They can be heard crying and screaming as officers stand with their back to the camera. A woman on the other side of the car is shown being led away in handcuffs.

Police then determined they had stopped the wrong car. It had Colorado license plates but a motorcycle with the same license plate number from Montana was the vehicle that had been reported as stolen on Sunday.

Jennifer Wurtz, who shot the video, said on camera that the police drew guns as they initially approached the car. After she told the officers that the children were scared and asked to be able to speak to them, she was told to back up 25 feet because she was interfering in their investigation.

In a statement Monday, police said officers are trained to do a “high-risk stop” when stopping a stolen car, which involves drawing weapons, telling occupants to exit the car and lie prone on the ground.
As it turns out the same license plate numbers different state and the stolen vehicle was a motorcycle. Great police work from these highly trained officers.
