Article seems to indicate an accident during renovation.

They think something due to renovation, although they have no real good indication

They don't even have firefighters on the scene yet. But the Central Spire is gone, and this doesn't look to stop anytime soon.

Some people did something and a fire started.

I see no way how this doesn't burn it to the ground.

My guess is some dumbass welder didn't have a fire watch.

Man, it's really fucked. The level of detail on those spires will be tough to replace.

I'm still wondering how the fire started.

It doesnt look like its reached the two bell towers yet. Maybe those can be saved?

CNN showing the spire collapsing now.

Like what we use for forest fires? Could work, although I dont know if France has any.

Fire Fighters on the scene now spraying it, but holy crap does that look insufficient.

Hopefully they're at least able to get the relics out.

This is 850 years of history we're talking about.

I dismissed this news alert because I thought this whole thing was mostly stone and a fire wouldn't do much more than burn some paintings and tapestries. Is much of this wood?

Yes, let's throw several tons of water at a weakened structure. That won't end poorly.

The entire roof and spire structures are wood framing. Absolute engineering marvels of framing at that. A lot of the vertical structure is stone but even that can be damaged by weakened cross members and a collapsing roof.
