  • Best Fan Moment

We’ve all had that one incredible story as a fan. It’s those moments that drive us forward. They feed our love for our team.

As we’ve covered the negative side of fandom, let’s take a moment to focus on some of the positive moments.

What’s your favorite moment or experience as a fan of your team?

I mentioned it before, but the immediate answer is the 4:50 mark of this video. Never felt such shared elation from so many in my life...It felt like the place was crumbling, and no one cared.

Michael Jordan pulling my son's Wizards hat off his head was also a pretty damn dope moment as a sports fan.

The moments that stick out to me:

2003: LSU v UGA, when Skylar Green catches the winning TD pass and the stadium erupts. I'm 4 rows from the top of the bowl yet manage to get pelted on the top of the head by an emptly pint bottle of Jim Beam.

2004: LSU v OSU. The monsoon occurring pregame delayed kickoff, causing tye drunkards and streakers to run amok. Then of course there were people getting stuck in the mud who were leaving early because the game was "over" until JROCK bailed LSU out and Alexis Serna finished it off by missing ANOTHER extra point.

2007: Performing on the field at the national title game. My view for the game sucked ass, but still.

            My Top-3

            • 1990, 1991 and 1992 NCAA Tournaments. Watching the tournament with my dad both years was just a great memory.

            • 2001 Final Four vs. Maryland at ESPNZone. Hostile territory. Every Maryland fan could taste victory as Duke fell down 22 points in the first half. There was much trash talking by the home team. By the end of the second half, most of said trash talking had all but ended.

I was approached in the first half by a rowdy Maryland fan who was talking all of the smack. I said, “Wanna bet?” He accepted the bet: one large beer. I saw him after the game had ended; he was not trying to pay up. It was about this time that I found myself surrounded by four, very tall guys wearing hats backwards. The hats were black, but as I was in DC, I feared the worst.

As it turns out, they were all former Duke players, three basketball and one football. One had been a starter in the late 90’s, although I forget his name. My group of friends hung with them for the remainder of the night. And, a few of them escorted the Maryland fan to the bar to buy me my much-appreciated victory beer.

It was the best Miller Lite I have ever tasted. I’ll remember that night forever.

            • Wake Forest vs Duke Game. This was the first time my dad had been to a Duke game in years, and the first game I treated him with tickets. We lost, because Chris Paul scored like 36 points, raining threes like Hurricane Tri-Fecta.

My roommate - from Baltimore and UMd student-on-hiatus - threw his TV out our room...From the second deck.

He finished his first BS from UMd while in the Corps, so now he's officially an alumnus...And, "he a 'Terp".

He's also now the senior SIGINT Chief Warrant Officer in the military.

Easy, my mom taking me to the Ohio State/Michigan game and watching Haskins and co hang 60 on their bitch asses.

LMFAO @ Ever favoring Michigan over Ohio State, let alone in Columbus.

My mom took me to the first World Series game ever in Atlanta. Steve Avery was pitching. Guys claiming to be his brothers lit a joint when my mom went to the bathroom. As it was the 90s, the usher just told them to put it out and stick to beer.

16 tee box at the Masters in 05. Saw Tiger’s approach at 15, putt, shot at 16 then this.

The entire 4th quarter everyone at my house was standing. We'd been crushed in these moments before, but this one felt different. The greatest block in Finals history, one of the biggest shots in Finals history. All to complete the greatest comeback in Finals history. Saw the end of the 52 year curse on Fathers day with my old man. Cried like a god damn baby.

This wasn't part of the actual SB but seeing my fellow Philadelphian's do trust falls off of busses at the Eagles parade (all successfully!) into a crowd of random people was the most surreal and stupidly on brand celebration that Eagles would have. It was kind of the moment where we all knew no one could take it away after sleeping on it.

Other random ones. Sergio Aguero vs QPR

Being at St. Joes vs Gonzaga in 2003 at MSG knowing that that day was going to be the start of a fun as fuck Freshman year of college.

Being at the Eagles/Lions blizzard game where LeSean McCoy ran for 200+ yards and just having a fucking blast. Couldn't even drink beer in the first half because it would turn into a slushie with all the snow falling.

Brad Lidge striking our Erik Hinskey to get the 25 year Philly sports drought. Along with that was Matt Stairs hitting one deep into the night as the Phillies rallied past the Dodgers in game 4 to take command of that series, and Joe Blanton hitting a solo shot in the World Series which actually ended it cause no one loses a series when Joe fucking Blanton hits a HR

Flyers coming back from 3-0 down in game 7 vs the Bruins after being down 3-0 in the series in 2010.

Strangely, that all makes sense. “Terps” are a strange and volatile lot.

i got to see cal ripken at kauffman play on 06/14/96 when he broke kinugasa's(japanese record) consecutive baseball games played.
also, wandering around mass street drunk after ku won the championship in 08 was fun.

I was in the stadium/arena for all of these:

2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs Game 4 - CBJ vs Tampa Bay. To see them finish off the sweep for the first series win in Franchise History.
2015 HR Derby - Todd Frazier winning in Cincinnati was just an unbelievably awesome night.
2020 MLS Cup Final - First sporting event since COVID. Was one of 1,500 who had tickets that night to see Columbus win their 2nd MLS Cup in History
2015 Elite Eight - 37-0, Notre Dame spanking Kentucky up and down the court. What a comeback to win the game. Unfortunately Wisconsin happened 7 days later but the E8 game was awesome.
2005 Bengals @ Lions at Ford Field - The Millen Man March. Bengals clinched their first Division Title/Playoff Berth since 1990. It was 17-0 at the end of the first quarter and all the Lions fans left to continue the Millen Man Protest.
2001/2005/2009/2013 USA - Mexico WCQ's. Each Dos A Cero got bigger then the last, culminating in 2013 that clinched the 2014 WC Trip to Brazil.
                            2007 Kentucky-LSU Football

There's probably more I'm forgetting off the top of my head

I've seen a hell of a lot more playoff/big game losses unfortunately in person.

Probably the greatest moment I ever saw in person was the time Brian McRae charged the Rangers dugout.
Either that or the 2008 NASCAR Kansas race where Carl Edwards cornerbombed Jimmie Johnson on the last turn, couldn't hold it, smacked the wall, still finish second,, then explained in the post race interview that "it worked in the video games so I thought I'd try it"
I'll also add in the three Copa America games I went to. First, the Peruvians were an absolute joy to be around, and their massive party in the street after they beat Haiti was fun to be swept up in. Then getting to see Messi play- everyone went nuts when he came out of the tunnel without his bib on after the half. And then seeing the USMNT dispatch Venezuela in the knockout round.

                              Watching on TV though
                              - Sherman's tip is #1. Full stop. I spent like ten minutes having no clue what to do with myself after that
                              - The ball going over Peyton Manning's head in the Super Bowl. Everything else after that felt like a dream.
                              - The last five minutes of the 2005 NFC Title game, when the reality that the Hawks were actually going to the Super Bowl set in. The atmosphere at Wings Central was insane.
                              - The Montlake Miracle. After the Huskies being pathetic for so long, shocking USC was a great way to come out of the dark ages. I wore my carpet out pacing in that game.
                              - The Chalmers Shot. I almost stormed out of my friends house because Kansas was blowing it so badly. Obviously glad I didn't.
                              - Svi's long three to tie up Duke in the 2018 Elite Eight. I crapped on Svi somuch for two years, and he redeemed himself with one glorious shot. Sure KU got rolled by Nova in the next game, but what you gonna do?
                              - King Felix''s perfect game I just caught the last couple innings, but watching him finish that off was magical.
